A Thanksgiving apart

Thanksgiving and Christmas are times when family and friends who have off travel the long (or short) miles to come and exchange good times, delicious food and watch football. Holidays are a little different when a loved one happens to be an officer.

Last year we were lucky to have Sam over for dinner. If it weren't for that knee injury, he probably would have worked the holiday. It was also the first year we had two Thanksgiving dinners in one day. Talk about sleeping on a full stomach.

This year my Thanksgiving has been stretched over the week. Because he is working tonight, we had Thanksgiving dinner with his family on Sunday. Yup full on turkey dinner. But I'm missing him tonight. Everyone is here at the table laughing and eating, then gathered around the tv for football. And he's out there patroling the streets probably getting shot at and called a racist nazi pig. Not how I or he would want to spend his Thanksgiving. But I can't be selfish. If he wasn't out there, someone else's officer would be and others are in the same boat as me and his family.

So Happy Thanksgiving to everyone near and far. And if your officer is out there tonight, may he be watched over and kept safe so you can have Thanksgiving together when he comes home.
